What is genderfluid?

Genderfluidity is when someone's gender changes over time, sometimes in the span of moments, and sometimes over a span of months or even years. It's a state of flux, and we asked gender experts to tell us more:

  • LGBTQ+ journalist Mira Lazine tells us that "genderfluid" describes someone "whose gender might change over time" and that it's a broad umbrella.[1]
  • Licensed social worker and LGBTQ+ identity expert Zoe Stoller says, "I'm genderfluid, and so my gender identity shifts and changes over time, and sometimes I feel more connected to womanhood, and sometimes I feel more connected to manhood, sometimes neither."[2]
  • LGBTQIA+ activist and educator NV Gay tells us that "genderfluid" falls under the nonbinary umbrella, and that someone who's nonbinary is someone whose gender isn't just male or female, but somewhere in between or outside of that binary.[3]
  • LGBTQ+ studies expert, public speaker, and spiritual guide shawndeez, Ph.D., says, "There's nothing wrong with going on a gender journey or exploring gender. If you do all this searching and exploration and you come back to the exact shape and form and person that you were, then you're just more, I'd say, more advanced in your gendered experience. There's nothing wrong with giving yourself the space and the time to explore."[4]
