What does it mean to be nonbinary?

"Nonbinary" is an umbrella term for anyone who exists outside the male-female gender binary. It's a large category that encompasses many experiences, and there are many different ways to be nonbinary. We talked to gender and identity experts to tell you all about it:

  • Licensed social worker and LGBTQ+ Identity Expert Zoe Stoller explains that "Non-binary is a broad gender and category of genders, which is lovely. It describes any gender identity that is outside of the strict binary of man and woman in whatever way."[1]
  • LGBTQIA+ activist and expert NV Gay explains how the term interacts with transgender identities: "Being non-binary does mean you're trans. Trans is not one simple way of looking. It's not one simple way of being. You know, you can be non-binary and go on hormones. You can be non-binary and have gender-affirming surgeries. Or you cannot. It's really what is best for you."[2]
  • LGBTQ+ studies expert, public speaker, and spiritual guide shawndeez, Ph.D., says, "Give yourself space to begin to entertain the question of, you know, do I actually feel at home in the gender that I was assigned at birth? That's kind of the guiding prompt that I would offer somebody who has that question."[3]
