If you’re ready to embark on your Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 adventure (or your expedition is already underway), you might want to know how romance works in the game. Luckily, it’s pretty straightforward. There are two romance options (Lune and Sciel), as well as opportunities to interact with them and initiate the romance over the course of the game’s later Acts. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explain how romance works in Expedition 33 and how to romance each character!

About Romance Options in Clairi Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur’s romance options are Lune and Sciel, two members of Expedition 33. To romance either of them, the player (as Verso) must talk with them in Camp; there are interactions available at various relationship rank levels that will continue the romance. Neither romance impacts the game’s story or ending.

There are two romanceable characters in the game: Lune and Sciel. Out of Clair Obscur’s colorful cast of characters, Lune and Sciel are the two who are open to romance with Verso. Additionally, romance isn’t available until Act 2 of the game (or even Act 3, if you choose to romance Lune).
- Lune is a scholar and magic-user who joins Expedition 33 in hopes of completing her parents’ research.
- Sciel is a former farmer and teacher; she uses a force called “Twilight mode” in her battles with Expedition 33.

Lune - Relationship Level 3 to 4While you’re still building up your relationship with Lune, the most important thing to do is reject Sciel’s advances. Lune’s romance initiates a little later—and it won’t be available if you’re already pursuing something with Sciel. Sciel will make advances at relationship levels 4 and 5; decline her romantic invitations to proceed with Lune’s romance. Additionally:
- At relationship level 3: When Lune asks to observe you, let her. This will build some trust between the two of you.
- At relationship level 4: Invite Lune to play music with you (when the two of you discuss hobbies and find that you both have a musical background).

Lune - Relationship Level 5 to 6While at relationship level 5 with Lune, you’ll need to complete a side-objective for her. Travel to the Sirene’s Dress location, which is situated on the eastern side of Sirene Island—you’ll need to use Esquie’s flight to get there. Inside Sirene’s Dress, solve the puzzle presented and then slay a Chromatic Glissando; after the battle, you’ll be able to find a journal written by Lune’s parents.^{[1]

- After you find the journal entry, go to Camp and discuss it with Lune. That conversation will bring your relationship level from 5 to 6!

Lune - Relationship Level 6 to 7So long as you’ve reached relationship level 6 without romancing Sciel, you can have a talk with Lune at Camp in which she’ll tell you she’s writing a song—and ask you to stay up with her and help her write it. This is the culmination of the romance! Choose the “Sure, I’d love to help you with ‘your song’” dialogue option to lock in the romance; with that, Verso and Lune will go off to spend some time in private.^{[2]

Sciel - Relationship Level 3 to 4Romancing Sciel isn’t hard—in fact, she’s the one who’ll approach you (Verso) about it. At relationship level 3, you’ll be able to talk to her at Camp and learn more about her past; afterward, Sciel will ask you if you’re interested in an “adventure.” To begin the romantic escapade, respond “Do you even need to ask?” This will also increase your relationship rank from 3 to 4.^{[3]

- If you’re trying to romance Lune, choose the other option—“Um, actually I’m a bit sleepy.” Your relationship rank with Sciel will increase anyway.

Sciel - Relationship Level 5 to 6There’s just one more romantic scene with Sciel after the previous step. Later on, at relationship level 5, you’ll be able to give Sciel a swimming lesson (and learn more of her backstory). So long as you initiated the romance earlier at level 3, she’ll propose one more night of “celebration” between the two of you. Choose “Let’s celebrate” to spend the night with Sciel (and complete the romance).^{[4]

- Sciel’s romance is really more of a fling—and if you prefer, you can call it off by selecting “I don’t think that’s a good idea. For me.” instead, with no penalties; either way, your relationship will increase from level 5 to 6.
- Keep in mind that you still won’t be able to romance Lune, even if you call things off with Sciel after initiating the romance earlier.

How does romance work in Expedition 33?

Romance is played out by talking to characters at Camp. That’s basically all there is to it (unless you’re romancing Lune, in which case there’s that small side quest, too). But, regardless, romances will unfold as you chat with either Lune or Sciel at Camp; in both cases, you’ll get dialogue prompting you to either lock in the romance or turn it down.^{[5]

- Romance also doesn’t affect your relationship ranks with Lune and Sciel. Basically, you can accept or reject their advances while still increasing your relationship rank with them.

No, romances do not change the core story in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Because romances are played out entirely at Camp (as mentioned above), they won’t affect any of your adventures on the Continent—nor will they change Clair Obscur’s story in any way.^{[7]
