In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the only way to power up your character is to develop their skills. Every time you raise a skill level, you make progress toward reaching the next character level, so the faster you improve your skills, the faster you’ll level up. It can take a while to hone your skills if you play by the rules, so we’ve made a comprehensive list of tricks and clever cheats to help you get ahead of the game. Read on, and we’ll show you how to max out your skills, level up quickly, and become an all-powerful Dragonborn ready to take on any challenge!
What’s The Quickest Way to Level Up in Skyrim?
Use leveling exploits to gain XP fast. You can do this early on in Helgen by sneak-attacking Hadvar or Ralof. Try shortcuts to get extra skill XP, such as summoning creatures, casting Muffle or Clairvoyance, or fast-traveling with Telekinesis. Try to improve multiple skills simultaneously for the fastest level gains!
Steps
How does gaining levels work in TESV: Skyrim?
-
Leveling up in Skyrim is based on accrued experience points. There are two basic types of experience points (XP): skill XP and character XP. Using a skill increases your XP for that skill alone, and when you gain skill XP, your level in that skill will increase. With each new skill level, you’ll also earn character XP—so, with enough skill level increases, your character will level up. Leveling up your skills is the only way to level up your character in turn.[17]
- The amount of character XP required for leveling up increases with each new level.
- The amount of skill XP you’ll get from using a skill is constant, but the amount of skill XP required for leveling up will steadily increase.
- At lower skill levels, you’ll earn smaller amounts of character XP for skill increases. As your skills get better, you’ll gain more character XP per skill level increase.
-
Certain skills will only increase under the right circumstances. Basically, you can just use skills and expect them to level up no matter what—you have to create the right conditions to gain skill XP. The prerequisites for gaining skill XP vary by skill:
- Sneak: You must be within range of creatures and crouched (sneaking). You don’t need to move, but moving (or completing more difficult actions) will boost your skill faster.
- Restoration: You must actually be replenishing health with a Restoration spell for your skill to improve; casting the spell when you (or other creatures) aren’t wounded won’t do anything.
- Pickpocketing: The more valuable the item you steal, the more skill XP you’ll get.
- Smithing, Alchemy, Enchanting: Skill XP is granted based on the item or enchantment you craft.
- Alteration: When casting Detect Life, you’ll only get skill XP if the spell actually detects life forms.
- Conjuration: Casting Raise Zombie or Bound Weapon will only grant skill XP if the summoned creature (or weapon) joins combat.
- Destruction: You must cast your Destruction spells on a valid creature or NPC to gain skill XP.
-
New levels grant perk points and attribute increases. Each time you level up, you’ll get one perk point—which you can spend on a perk from the Skill Tree—and you’ll be able to increase an attribute (Health, Magicka, or Stamina) by 10 points. You don’t need to use perk points right away; you can always save them for later if you’re trying to unlock the minimum requirements for a particular perk.[18]
- Attribute choices are permanent, unless you use cheats to undo them.

QuestionHow do I level up the fastest?
Community AnswerI've found sneaking behind the greybeards and hitting them with an iron dagger is very effective. Then use restoration spells to heal them. Once you hit 100 sneak, make it legendary. Then start all over. -
QuestionHow do I do an alchemy loop?
Community AnswerThe alchemy loop is when you make a potion that fortifies your enchanting skill, then you enchant a piece of armor that fortifies alchemy, and repeat. -
QuestionHow do I level up my speech skill?
Community AnswerYou need to sell things to merchants, or persuade people. The best selling place is Riften -- it's like a general goods place in the center.

Tips
Tips from our Readers
- Gather everything when out exploring. Mixing random ingredients ups the alchemy skill, and they make good money, too. If you get enchanted armor, it can be disenchanted to learn the enchantment and up your enchantment skill. Even junk you find can be sold to someone for low gold. Every interaction ups your speech skill, which is one of the hardest skills to level up.
- To level Sneak, go to a Guard Barracks. I go to the back room of the barracks behind Whiterun. Except during shift change, when the sleeping guards wake up to leave for work, and the previous shift comes in, there are 6 guards: 5 sleeping and one awake. Just sneak back and forth between the two rooms with sleeping guards.
- With the black market black book ability, you can raise the speech skill by selling the Dremora merchant items.
- Try focusing on forging jewelry. The more expensive, the faster you'll level up.
