Did you find an Instagram post you want to share with a friend or on your Story? Fortunately, you have a few sharing options for Instagram posts, like sharing it to your Story, sending it to specific people, or reposting it to your feed by using screenshots. You can even use Instagram's new Repost option to directly share posts to your followers' feeds. Here's how to share a post on Instagram using your iPhone, iPad, or Android.
Send or Repost an Instagram Post
To share a post on Instagram, tap the airplane underneath under the post and choose to add it to your Story, send to a friend, copy the post's link, or cross-post onto another connected platform. You can also click the two curved arrows to repost the post to your own account.
Steps
-
Browse your feed to find a post you want to share to your Story. If you aren't automatically directed to your feed once you open Instagram, tap the house icon.
- You can only share someone's post in the feed to your story if their account is public and they've allowed resharing of their posts.

-
Tap Add to story. You can find this in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen.
- If you can't see this, that account might be private or have settings that restrict sharing.
-
Edit the post (optional). To add your own caption, tap the text icon in the top left corner of the editing screen. You'll be able to type in your message. When you're finished, tap the arrow icon.
-
Tap Share. At this point, you may be prompted to choose whether to share to “Your Stories” or “Close Friends.” Select Your Stories, then tap Share. You can view the shared post in your Stories from the list of Stories above your feed.
- You can also tap Your Stories under the editing screen to instantly share the story.
- If you want to prevent people from reposting your posts to their stories, tap the Menu icon in the top-right corner, select Sharing and reuse, and then toggle off Posts and reels to stories.[1]
-
Browse your feed to find a post you want to repost. Instagram now has a built-in Repost function that allows you to share someone else's post to your own followers. Reposts also have their own place on your profile.[2]
- You can only repost someone's post if their account is public and they have repost permissions toggled on.
-
Tap the Repost icon. This is the two curved arrows underneath the post. When you tap it, the post will be reposted to your profile. If you want to undo it, you can quickly tap Undo in the menu that pops up. You can also navigate to your profile, tap the Repost section, and then tap the arrows on the post again.
-
Tap beneath the post you want to share. If you don't see this icon, the person may have their account privacy set to private. You can only share posts from a public account.
- Use this method if you see a photo or video in your feed that you want to share with another friend on Instagram. The person who uploaded the photo or video will not be notified that you’re sharing their post.
-
Select a recipient. You'll see a few friends with recent interactions. If you don't see the right person, type their name or username into the search bar and select their photo.
- Tap additional profiles to share the post with more than one person. Don't worry, you can choose to send it separately or as a group chat.
-
Enter a message. To start typing, tap the box that says Write a Message and then enter any text you want to include.
- You can skip this step if you don’t want to add your own message.
-
Tap Send or Send separately. It’s at the bottom of the screen. You'll see Send separately if you selected more than one person. If you want to send it to those users in a new group chat, tap Create group instead.
- Your friend will receive the shared post as a Direct Message.
- If the post you’re sharing is private, your friend (the recipient of your direct message) must be following that account to see it.
-
Start your screen recorder. You can find this function in the Quick Settings panel on Android or the Control Center of an iPhone or iPad and activate it by tapping the recording icon.[3]
- If you don't have a built-in app for this, you can find plenty of apps that claim to do this on the App Store or Google Play Store.
- You can also skip this step if you're planning on taking a screenshot of the Story instead of a video.
-
Open Instagram. This app looks like a multi-colored orange, pink, and purple camera icon that you can find on one of your Home screens, in the app drawer, or by searching.
-
Navigate to the Story you want to repost and crop your screen recording to capture the Story. Since you started recording before you opened Instagram, the video will record everything on your screen, so you'll want to go to the Story that you want to repost.
- The screen recorder will also grab your phone's UI, so if you don't want that in the Story, you can crop it out by pinching your fingers together.[4] Alternatively, you can crop the video with your phone's video editor.
- Stop recording your screen when the Story is done. You'll follow the same steps as before or tap an icon in your notifications panel to disable screen recording.
-
Edit the video or screenshot. You can use the built-in apps with your camera to edit the screen recording you just took, then cut out the parts of the screen recording that aren't relevant to the Story, such as when you first started the screen recording, then opened Instagram, then navigated to the Story.[5]
- You'll also want to edit out any UI you weren't able to crop out during the recording.
- If you're taking a screenshot with an iPhone or Android, make sure you crop it to edit out your phone's UI like the battery life and buttons on the screen.
-
Upload it to your Story. In order to upload content from your camera roll or library to your Story, swipe left on the main feed and tap the camera roll icon, then tap the video you captured.
- Tap Next and Share to Story to continue.
- If you're tagged in the Story, you can skip the workaround method and share it easily.
-
Tap your Profile icon and find the post you want to share. It’s the outline of a person’s head and shoulders at the bottom right corner of the screen.
- Use this method to share your own photo and video posts on other social networking sites (e.g. Facebook, Tumblr) or over email.
-
Select a sharing method. You can choose Copy link to copy the link to your device's clipboard and paste it elsewhere, or you can scroll through the apps on the bottom to post to any of your connected social media apps.
- If you're posting to another app, you may be asked to log in again.
-
Send the post. Follow the app's instructions to complete and upload your post on the platform.
