Domain Expansions are one of the unique aspects of Jujutsu Kaisen. Only the strongest sorcerers have a Domain Expansion, and most have to study Jujutsu for a long time to figure out how to construct one. Today, we’re doing a deep dive into the Domain Expansions in JJK, plus what they are, and which ones are strongest (and weakest).

Domain Expansions in Jujutsu Kaisen

  1. Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine is one of the strongest Domain Expansions in all of Jujutsu. Malevolent Shrine doesn’t have a barrier, and Sukuna can expand it up to 200m. Anything caught inside is instantly shredded by Sukuna’s slicing Cleave and Dismantle attacks—including opponents, bystanders, and even buildings.[1]
    • Appearance: This Domain Expansion is a twisted, demonic version of a Buddhist shrine, with giant mouths at each entrance, horns and a buffalo skull on the roof, and a mountain of buffalo skulls at the base.
    • Hand sign: Sukuna folds his index and pinky fingers down against his palms. His middle and ring fingers are extended and pressed together, and he holds his hands in front of his face. This is said to resemble the hand seal of Yama, the Hindu god of Death.
  2. 2
Unlimited Void (Satoru Gojo) Gojo’s Domain Expansion is Unlimited Void (or Infinite Void). In it, Gojo doesn’t use violence to defeat his enemies. Instead, he floods his opponent’s mind with an infinite amount of information. As their brains try to process the flood of thoughts and feelings, they’re paralyzed, leaving them vulnerable to follow-up attacks by Gojo.[2]
    • Appearance: Unlimited Void looks a giant black hole, with a galaxy-filled outer space backdrop.[3]
    • Hand sign: To manifest Unlimited Void, Gojo crosses his middle finger behind his index finger and curls his thumb, pinky, and ring finger together. This resembles the hand sign used to invoke Indra, the king of Hindu gods.
    • Note: Unlimited Void was also temporarily used by Yuta Okkotsu.

  3. 3
Yuji’s Domain (Yuji Itadori) Yuji’s Domain Expansion (sometimes called Hometown Domain or Benevolent Shrine) is a recreation of the town that he grew up in. Its peaceful, quiet appearance speaks to Yuji’s inner nature. Within the Domain Expansion, Yuji overpowers his opponents using Dismantle, which targets their souls rather than their physical bodies.[4]
    • Appearance: This domain mimics Yuji’s hometown, including parks, stores, and farms.
    • Hand sign: Yuji presses his palms together with his fingers extended, then curls all of his fingers inward, leaving only his middle fingers steepled together.[5]
  4. 4
Self-Embodiment of Perfection (Mahito) When Mahito manifests Self-Embodiment of Perfection, he gains the ability to use Idle Transfiguration to transform his opponents without touching them. It’s one of the strongest Domain Expansions wielded by any sorcerer, especially once Mahito shortens the ability to 0.2 seconds—just enough time to transfigure his opponent without them being able to strike back.[6]
    • Appearance: Self-Embodiment of Perfection creates a black void surrounded by giant hands held in a flower shape, with arms that form a net around the opponent.[7]
    • Hand sign: To summon his Domain Expansion, Mahito opens his mouth wide, and two small hands in his mouth form the signs. The top hand forms a triangle shape, with the fingers interlaced at the top. The bottom hand makes a circle by touching its middle and ring fingers to its thumb, with its index and pinky fingers steepled together at the top.[8]
  5. 5
Deadly Sentencing (Hiromi Higuruma) Higuruma is also known as Defense Attorney, so naturally, his domain manifests as a courtroom. When an opponent is trapped inside Deadly Sentencing, they face Higuruma’s shikigami Judgeman, who puts the enemy on trial for their past crimes. If they’re convicted, the sentence can either be Confiscation (the opponent loses their ability for a certain amount of time) or Execution (Higuruma obtains the lethal Executioner’s Sword).[9]
    • Appearance: Deadly Sentencing looks like a courtroom, complete with a witness stand and judge’s bench.[10] No one is able to use violence in the courtroom, including Higuruma.
    • Hand sign: Higuruma strikes with his gavel to summon his Domain Expansion.
  6. 6
Idle Death Gamble (Kinji Hakari) Hakari’s Idle Death Gamble is a luck-based Domain Expansion. It’s based on a pachinko machine, and if he hits the jackpot, he temporarily gains unlimited cursed energy, giving him the ability to recover from even the strongest hits. He also has an increased chance of hitting a jackpot if he spins again after getting one.[11]
    • Appearance: Idle Death Gamble looks like a real pachinko machine. If Hakari matches two numbers on a spin, he goes into Reach Mode. This triggers one of 4 richii scenarios, each with its own probability that Hakari will hit a jackpot.[12]
    • Hand sign: To cast Idle Death Gamble, Hakari turns his right hand palm-side-down and presses the tip of his right index finger into the pad of his thumb, leaving his middle, ring, and pinky fingers extended. He cups his left hand palm-side-up beneath his right hand.[13]
  7. 7
Authentic Mutual Love (Yuta Okkotsu) When Yuta summons Authentic Mutual Love, he pulls a katanas from the ground. This sword represents a technique that he has copied from another sorcerer, and it will be a sure-hit attack throughout the course of the fight.[14]
    • Appearance: Authentic Mutual Love is a vast landscape filled with crosses and katanas. The upper boundary is formed by sacred knots.
    • Hand sign: Yuta puts on his ring to summon his Domain Expansion.
  8. 8
Womb Profusion (Kenjaku) Kenjaku’s Womb Profusion is the only open barrier domain besides Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine. This means there’s no target for opponents to attack to take it down, but it also leaves a vulnerability, since opponents can simply escape if they get too close to the edge.[15]
    • Appearance: Womb Profusion is a towering tree-like structure made up of demonic, cursed heads with gaping mouths.[16]
    • Hand sign: Kenjaku uses the anti-forked palm to summon Womb Profusion. He turns his hands so the palms are facing away from each other, then interlaces his straightened fingers.
  9. 9
Time Cell Moon Palace (Naoya Zenin) Time Cell Moon Palace is a unique Domain Expansion—when an opponent is trapped inside, animation film is injected into their neck. The person must follow Naoya’s 24 Frames-per-Second rule, where the opponent has to exactly match Naoya’s movements. If they don’t, they’ll be covered with cuts—enough to even cut off a limb if they try to fight against it.[17]
    • Appearance: Time Cell Moon Palace creates a black void, and in the center is a path of flesh that leads to a single large eye behind Zenin.
    • Hand sign: Naoya holds his hands with his middle, ring, and pinky fingers curled inwards. His index fingers and thumbs are straightened and pointed toward the opponent.
  10. 10
Chimera Shadow Garden (Megumi) As a descendant of the Zenin clan, Megumi inherits the 10 Shadows technique—a powerful technique that allows the user to summon 10 shikigami to help them fight. However, he fails to fully manifest the power, only summoning six shadows. Because of this, Megumi is considered to have the only incomplete Domain Expansion.[18]
    • Appearance: Megumi’s Chimera Shadow Garden has a floor coated in a shadowy liquid. The rest of it is black or cloudy—likely a result of the technique being incomplete.
    • Hand sign: Megumi curls all of his fingers inward, interlacing his index and middle fingers and pressing his thumbs together.
  11. 11
Threefold Affliction (Yorozu) In Threefold Affliction, Yorozu can use Cursed Energy to create almost any object. She can then use that object for a sure-hit attack, or she can wield her True Sphere to destroy anything in her domain. Like Sukuna, Yorozu was a sorcerer in the Heian Era, and she’s reincarnated in the modern age in Megumi’s sister’s body.[19]
    • Appearance: A large, white void filled with floating structures that look like insects’ nervous systems.
    • Hand sign: To summon Threefold Affliction, Yorozu curls her fingers into her palms, interlacing both hands, then extends her middle fingers and presses them together.
  12. 12
Horizon of the Captivating Skandha (Dagon) Dagon’s Domain Expansion is a peaceful beach scene—or at least, it’s peaceful when Dagon and his friends gather there. Once an opponent arrives, Dagon uses Death Swarm to summon a hoarde of shikigami to attack the enemy.[20]
    • Appearance: Dagon’s Domain Expansion is a tropical, sandy beach, complete with palm trees, an ocean, and vicious shikigami that take the shape of sea creatures.
    • Hand sign: Dagon lost all of his fingers in battle, so he has to draw a cursed seal to manifest his Domain Expansion.
  13. 13
Coffin of the Iron Mountain (Jogo) Coffin of the Iron Mountain is the Domain Expansion belonging to the Jogo, a curse born out of mankind’s fear of volcanos. Fittingly, his Domain Expansion recreates the inside of a volcano. The temperature is so high inside the chamber that most sorcerers would combust immediately, but if they survive that, Jogo attacks them with molten rocks.[21]
    • Appearance: Coffin of the Iron Mountain looks like a rocky cave with low ceilings and a stone floor surrounded by pools of magma.
    • Hand sign: To manifest Coffin of the Iron Mountain, extends his middle fingers and presses them together. He interlaces his index and ring fingers, keeping them straight, and lines up his pinky fingers with his ring fingers.
  14. 14
Graveyard Domain (Smallpox Deity) In a battle against Mei Mei, Pseudo-Geto summons a special grade cursed spirit called the Smallpox Deity. This cursed spirit activates its own Domain Expansion, then traps its opponents in a coffin, counting down from 3 to 1. If the Smallpox Deity reaches 1, the opponent will die.[22]
    • Appearance: The Smallpox Deity’s Domain Expansion looks like a graveyard filled with headstones.
    • Hand sign: To summon the Graveyard Domain, the Smallpox Deity holds one hand in a fist and presses it into the other hand’s open palm.[23]

What is a Domain Expansion?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Domain Expansions are unique spaces manifested by sorcerers in JJK. Only the most powerful Jujutsu sorcerers can create a Domain Expansion. Domain Expansions are similar to a pocket dimension—they create their own version of reality, usually contained within a distinct barrier. Opponents who are trapped within a Domain Expansion are subjected to the sorcerer’s most powerful attacks.[24]
    • A domain can be collapsed if the opponent attacks the barrier or the sorcerer who’s manifesting it.
    • Domain Expansions manifest the sorcerer’s innate domain—or their unique inner self.

Who has the strongest Domain Expansion?

  1. It’s hard to pick the strongest out of Malevolent Shrine and Unlimited Void. When Sakuna and Gojo battled, they both manifested their domains several times. Although Sakuna ultimately defeated Gojo, it was a close battle, and their Domain Expansions were evenly matched.
    • Some people rank Sakuna’s Malevolent Shrine slightly higher because he defeated Gojo in battle.
    • Other fans rank Gojo’s Unlimited Void slightly higher because Sakuna’s Cleave and Dismantle attacks can be temporarily blocked inside Malevolent Shrine.

Who has the weakest Domain Expansion?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Megumi’s Domain Expansion is probably the weakest. Megumi failed to fully manifest his domain, so it’s considered incomplete. Because of that, it’s typically thought to be the weakest Domain Expansion. If he had manifested the complete 10 Shadows technique, though, he could potentially have been much stronger.
    • The Smallpox Deity’s Graveyard Domain is also fairly weak—the countdown effect gives opponents plenty of time to escape, assuming they’re strong enough.

Do all Domain Expansions have a sure hit?

PDF download Download Article
  1. There’s some debate over the “sure hit” terminology in the JJK fandom. But generally speaking, all Domain Expansions include some technique that’s guaranteed to take effect once the ability is active.
    • Some of these techniques are more obvious than others. For instance, Sukuna’s Cleave and Dismantle attacks are sure hits in Malevolent Shrine. But in Hakari’s Idle Death Gamble, the sure hit is the set of rules that govern his pachinko game, jackpots, and probability boosters. In Higaruma’s Deadly Sentencing, the sure hit is the set of rules that you have to follow inside the domain.

Domain Expansions are an advanced cursed technique in Jujutsu Kaisen, and they’re considered some of the most powerful techniques used by sorcerers. To do a Domain Expansion, a jujutsu user must use a specific hand sign to create a barrier around themselves and then use cursed energy to power their innate domain, which is a reflection of the user’s inner self and mental state. Their domain expands to the edges of the barrier, making it look like a large black sphere from the outside. Domain Expansions cost a lot of cursed energy, so they usually only last for a short time and can lead to burnout, leaving the user defenseless. Only a few powerful characters can cast it more than once per day.

Domain Expansions typically match the user’s inner self, and each one is unique. Some of the most notable Domain Expansions from JJK include:
  • Sukuna: Malevolent Shrine sends out multiple slashing attacks that cut through anyone or anything in his way, reflecting his disregard for consequences.
  • Gojo: Unlimited Void traps anyone within range and immobilizes them by flooding their minds with endless information, showing off his immense power.
  • Jogo: Coffin of the Iron Mountain traps enemies in a large volcano, which reflects his fiery temper and pride.
