Anime expert Ed Erskine explains who Yuta is and his cursed technique
PDF download Download Article

Jujutsu Kaisen’s many cursed techniques are fascinating extensions of the sorcerers who wield them—and Yuta Okkotsu’s technique is particularly powerful. But there’s some confusion among fans about what Yuta’s technique really is (and how it works). Is it the cursed spirit, Rika? Is it the “Copy” ability? Well, we’re here to explain! In this article, we’ll walk you through the details of Yuta’s cursed techniques and how they work together, with exclusive insights from an anime expert. We’ll also talk about the many techniques that Yuta has replicated in the manga and anime, as well as his special domain expansions.

A Brief Introduction to Yuta’s Cursed Technique

Anime expert Ed Erskine says Yuta has enormous levels of cursed energy, which transforms his loved one, Rika Orimoto, into a vengeful spirit. The spirit serves as a storage and conduit for all the cursed techniques Yuta replicates. His innate cursed technique is Copy, allowing him to copy and use other sorcerers’ cursed techniques.

  1. The spirit took on the soul of Yuta’s childhood sweetheart, Rika Orimoto, after her death. Even after Rika’s soul was freed from the spirit, she left the last pieces of her willpower behind to protect Yuta. Now, the cursed spirit functions as the external storage for the cursed techniques Yuta replicates using his innate “Copy” technique.
    • Rika is recognized as one of the strongest cursed spirits in existence—often called the “Queen of Curses.” She’s so strong that she can immobilize Yuji (an incredibly strong sorcerer).
    • Despite being a cursed spirit, Rika always acts to protect Yuta in battle. Yuta used to struggle with controlling her—but after training, his control has improved.
    • According to Erskine, Yuta possesses phenomenally enormous levels of cursed energy because he’s a descendant of Michizane Sugawara and a distant relative of Satoru Gojo, one of the strongest sorcerers revealed in JJK.[1]

  2. This gives Yuta better access to Rika’s stored techniques. Yuta wears a promise ring (originally given to him by the human Rika) through which he can connect to cursed spirit Rika—and while wearing it, he can also manifest her. Furthermore, all of Yuta’s other cursed techniques function through Rika. She isn’t his innate technique, but rather the vessel in which techniques are stored and accessed.
    • Yuta can use his connection to a manifested Rika to refill his own pool of cursed energy with hers.
    • However, Yuta can only maintain a connection with a fully manifested Rika for about 5 minutes at a time.

  1. And it’s an incredibly powerful one: he can use it to copy other sorcerers’ cursed techniques and use them. The catch is that Rika must consume a body part from the sorcerer before Yuta can use their technique—and for stronger techniques, Rika must consume more vital body parts.[2]
    • Yuta can only use copied cursed techniques while connected to Rika (through the ring that he wears).
    • He’s even capable of using multiple copied techniques in a row, one after the other!

What cursed techniques has Yuta replicated?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Cursed Speech is Toge Inumaki’s innate ability, replicated by Yuta. The technique turns words into cursed energy that can compel targets. Upon first using the technique, Yuta used a megaphone (manifested by Rika) with the Inumaki clan’s Snake Eyes and Fangs symbol to compel all of Suguru Geto’s lower-grade curses to die.[3]
    • Since first using it, Yuta has honed his ability to use Cursed Speech.
    • Toge’s technique causes the Snake Eyes and Fangs to appear on his mouth—and after becoming more skilled with the technique, Yuta can do the same.
  2. Shikigami is Dhruv Lakdawalla’s innate cursed technique; it allows him to summon a flock of small, bat-like shikigami that swarm opponents and form a barrier of sorts around them. Plus, if the target tries to leave the barrier of shikigami, they’ll lash out with slashing attacks. Yuta learned to use this technique with his hair as the go-between.[4]
  3. Sky Manipulation is Takako Uro’s cursed technique—a sorcerer reincarnated by Kenjaku during the Culling Game. Her cursed technique allows her to control the sky as if it were a tangible surface, pulling at the atmosphere like a sheet. Yuta replicates this ability during the Culling Game, learning how to manipulate the sky as well.
  4. Thin Ice Breaker is essentially another version of Takako’s technique, this time used offensively in battle. With Thin Ice Breaker, the user (Takako or, later, Yuta) can hit the surface of the sky and shatter it like ice, pelting targets with the shards.
  5. Technique Extinguishment is Angel’s technique (Angel being an ancient sorcerer reincarnated for the Culling Game). This technique allows Angel (and, in turn, Yuta) to nullify all jujutsu, which is an incredibly powerful ability. When fighting Sukuna, Yuta unleashes this technique—forcing Sukuna to use the Hollow Wicker Basket technique to prevent being removed from his vessel.[5]
  6. Maximum Output is essentially an extension of Angel’s Technique Extinguishment; it calls down a pillar of light and extinguishes any cursed technique caught in the light. Yuta learns to activate the technique with a hand sign and ultimately imbues it into his domain’s barrier—thus ensuring that he’d hit Sukuna with it.
  7. G Warstaff is a cursed technique initially belonging to a French sorcerer named Charles Bernard; it allows the user to see a target’s future by connecting them to a manga panel and drawing their blood. When Yuta activates this technique, he uses his katana to draw “ink” (unlike Charles, who uses a pen-like spear); this lets him predict Sukuna’s movements in battle.
  8. Shrine is a cursed technique replicated from the King of Curses himself, Sukuna. The technique allows a user to cut a target apart with a series of powerful invisible slashes. In Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuta gets Sukuna to grab the katana containing the Shrine technique and then turns it against him, nearly cutting him apart with it.
  9. Brain Transplant is a cursed technique originally belonging to Kenjaku, the orchestrator of the Culling Game; Yuta learns it after having Rika consume Kenjaku’s body. The technique allows the user to swap bodies with another person by transplanting their brain; Yuta uses it to take over Satoru Gojo’s body and fight Sukuna (though it nearly kills him).[6]
  10. Limitless is a cursed technique from the Gojo clan, and thus learned from Satoru Gojo after Yuta takes over his body (via Brain Transplant). Essentially, using the latter technique allows Yuta to utilize the former—along with Gojo’s domain expansion, Unlimited Void. The Limitless technique lets the user manifest the concept of “infinity” and use it to manipulate space.[7]
  11. This technique is the empowered form of Limitless; Yuta is also able to use it after taking over Gojo’s body via Brain Transplant. Lapse: Blue amplifies the manifested infinity with cursed energy, allowing the user to converge space at a specific point and pull its surroundings inward like a magnet. Yuta also uses this technique against Sukuna, although he gets interrupted.
  12. Hollow Technique: Purple is yet another extension of Limitless, even more powerful than Lapse: Blue. Yuta is once again able to use this technique while possessing Gojo’s body; ordinarily, it’s an extremely hard-to-use technique known only to a few members of the Gojo clan. The technique combines Lapse and Reversal of the Limitless, creating a mass that can be thrown at targets to destroy them.
    • Yuta manages to use this technique against Sukuna, immobilizing him with Cursed Speech before throwing Purple at him.

Yuta’s Reverse Cursed Technique

  1. That’s because Yuta is one of the few skilled sorcerers able to use a reverse cursed technique; he can tap into his cursed energy and use it to heal injuries. Using a reverse cursed technique and outputting it to others is very difficult to do, but Yuta manages it in his first year of training—and he eventually becomes a very skilled user.
    • In the Culling Game, Yuta uses the reverse cursed technique to heal himself repeatedly, thus avoiding any serious damage (although it drained much of his cursed energy).
    • Yuta also uses the reverse cursed technique to prevent Yuji from dying—and to heal Naoya, removing Choso’s poison from his body.

Yuta’s Domain Expansions

  1. Authentic Mutual Love is Yuta’s innate domain expansion: a field filled with cross-like objects and katanas and circled by tied-together ropes that form knots symbolic of love. Inside the domain, Yuta can use any of the katanas in battle and activate replicated cursed techniques (without restrictions). Also, all copied techniques work with the domain’s guaranteed-hit effect.
  2. Unlimited Void is actually Gojo’s domain expansion, but Yuta can use it when taking over his body. The domain’s interior looks like outer space—with distant galaxies and speckles of white, as well as a large black hole. Enemies caught in the domain are suddenly flooded with unending amounts of information, leaving their bodies paralyzed.
    • Yuta launches Unlimited Void against Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine domain expansion in battle.

Who is Yuta Okkotsu in JJK?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Yuta Okkotsu is the main protagonist of the JJK prequel series. According to Erskine, we first learn and see Yuta in the prequel movie Jujutsu Kaisen 0. “He is introduced as this kindhearted, timid teen who gets bullied by his classmates.”[8] Eventually, he becomes a powerful ally to Satoru Gojo, with nearly infinite cursed energy and the ability to copy techniques.
