Gen Z is always talking about maxxing something. There’s looksmaxxing, gymmaxxing, and now hagmaxxing. Hagmaxxing involves dating people older than you, but takes things to the extreme. What does hagmaxxing mean?

Hagmaxxing typically refers to when younger people (usually men) intentionally date older women. It can also refer to the practice of maximizing personal traits that are associated with old age, such as spending more time alone and taking up hobbies that are usually associated with older people.

Hagmaxxing is typically practiced by younger men, who limit their dating preferences to older women. The age gap tends to be fairly wide. While there aren’t any official numbers, the age gap tends to be at least 5 years or more, to the point where the difference in age is physically noticeable.^{[1]

Leaning into your age, or hagmaxxing, in this sense, looks like practicing hobbies typically associated with older people, like crossword puzzles, staying indoors and watching game shows, or sitting on the porch. The term “hagmaxxing” was first used in 2021 on 4Chan. In September 2021, an anonymous 4Chan user posted on the /r9k/ forum saying, “I dont care about looking old. Im hagmaxxing.” After this, the term wouldn’t see a resurgence in popularity until 2024, when @kinematografi took to X (formerly Twitter) to talk about how you need to be hagmaxxing, living in the swamp, and obsessed with preserving the forest.^{[3]

While the term originated in 4Chan and gained popularity through X (formerly Twitter), the trend of hagmaxxing as it relates to dating older women didn’t become popular until an image of a fake news article reading “Meet the hagmaxxers: Gen Z’s new social trend of dating older women” was shared across X through various account for engagement.^{[4]

Hagmaxxing isn’t just done to secure a sugar mama or sugar daddy—sometimes, people just like being with older people. Whether that’s because of looks, a desire for maturity, or something else entirely depends on the person, but in this case, it all boils down to some sort of attraction.

The term “hagmaxxing” tends to be more problematic than the practice. Since you’re technically calling the older people you’re trying to date hags, the term is problematic, as “hag” is often used to crudely refer to an old woman. The practice itself isn’t problematic, however, as long as you aren’t dating for the wrong reasons (like trying to use them for their money or fetishizing them).^{[7]
