We’ll break down the origins of the proxy symbol along with what it represents, so keep reading…if you dare.

The Slenderman Proxy Symbol, Explained

The proxy symbol is a circle with an X through the middle, representing Slenderman in creepypasta stories. It’s originally from the Marble Hornets web series. When the symbol appears, it’s a sign that Slenderman is nearby. If someone has the proxy symbol on them, they’re possessed and under Slenderman's control.

  1. When you see the proxy symbol, it may be a warning sign that Slenderman is in the area. In creepypasta series, characters who encounter the proxy symbol are approached by Slenderman or one of his proxies afterwards.
  2. People who have been possessed or taken over by Slenderman are known as “proxies” and typically have the symbol drawn or tattooed somewhere on their body. While they’re possessed, they may try to harm other people or lead them closer to Slenderman so he can possess even more people.
    • While not officially canon, the Slenderia blog groups proxies into 5 different categories.
      • Hallowed are people who have been completely possessed by Slenderman and only do something when they’re told.
      • Berserkers are under Slenderman’s control, but they can still act on their own at other times.
      • Sleepers are proxies who are unaware they’re under Slenderman’s control because he possesses them while they’re sleeping or blacked out.
      • Agents act and do things for Slenderman even though he does not control them.

Where does the proxy symbol come from?

  1. Marble Hornets was one of the original Slenderman creepypasta series, where someone watches scary tapes their friend recorded. The symbol first appears in “Entry #8” when the main character, Alex, draws it multiple times. After that, it appears throughout the series whenever Slenderman or one of his proxies is nearby.[2]
    • In Marble Hornets, Slenderman is called “The Operator,” and the symbol is also referred to as the “Operator symbol.” The symbol may represent the number 0, which was the number you’d dial on a phone to reach the operator.
    • The characters Masky (Tim) and Hoody (Brian) are commonly mistaken for proxies, but they are not officially proxies in the Marble Hornets canon.
    • Watch Marble Hornets on YouTube to see the original proxy symbol.
  2. After Marble Hornets became popular, the proxy symbol became an unofficial logo to represent Slenderman. Web series such as TribeTwelve, EverymanHybrid, and MyDarkJournal all use the symbol to mark Slenderman and the proxies he’s taken over.
    • In TribeTwelve, a character called The Observer is one of the primary proxies that spies on the main character and leads a group of other proxies called “The Collective.”
    • In EverymanHybrid, proxies appear throughout the videos in a deep trance while they’re under the influence of Slenderman.
    • MyDarkJournal’s main character is a proxy because he let Slenderman take control of his mind.
    • The video game Slender: The Arrival consulted with the creators of Marble Hornets, and the symbol appears throughout the game on pages you collect and on a proxy that chases you.
