There are three tiers of chestplates: Light, Medium, and Heavy—but the stats of each piece can vary depending on which ores you use in the forge. We’re here with tips for crafting the very best chestplates, whether you’re playing in the late game, battling through the mid-game, or just starting out. Let’s get started!

Best Late-Game Chestplates in The Forge
-
Darkryte Knight Chestplate with Mythril: Best Overall This chestplate is the most powerful in the whole game. The regular version of the chestplate has a base defense of around 179 and a stat multiplier of 5.60x. You also have a 1 in 2 chance of crafting the Dark Knight version, which has a base defense of up to 280.

Recipe and Traits:
- 20 Darkryte (15% Dodge chance)
- 13 Demonite (25% Burn chance)
- 6 Mythril (5.1% Vitality)
- Note about recipes: With most recipes, you typically have about a 75% chance of crafting your target equipment. However, there’s also a chance you might craft something else, like leggings or a helmet.

2Darkryte Knight Chestplate with Lightite: Fast and Strong If you want a lighter version of the Darkryte chestplate, try swapping out the Mythril for Lightite to gain enhanced movement speed. This armor ranges from around 185 to 288 base DEF—even better than the version with Mythril, although the Mythril’s Health boost makes that one a little stronger overall.

3Demonite Knight Chestplate: Powerful Defense It can take a long time to save up the Darkryte and Demonite needed to make the Darkryte Knight Chestplate. This chestplate is a good option if you have a stash of Demonite, but not Darkryte. The regular version has a base defense of 142, and the Dark Knight variant can have up to 264 DEF. You will lose some health from the Eye Ore, but this is balanced by the Mythril.
-
Recipe and Traits:
- 14 Demonite (25% Burn chance)
- 11 Mythril (15% Vitality)
- 11 Eye Ore (15% Weapon DMG, -10% Health)

4Eye Ore Knight Chestplate: Damage Boost The Eye Ore set of armor gives you a big damage boost. The chestplate ranges from 164 to 257 base DEF. You do sacrifice some health with this set, but you can help offset that by equipping your armor with runes like Drain Edge (heals you when you damage enemies) or Ward Patch (reduces the damage you take).[1]
-
Recipe and Traits:
- 16 Eye Ore (15% Physical DMG, -10% Health)
- 12 Demonite (20% Burn chance)
- 12 Darkryte (15% Dodge chance)

Best Beginner Chestplates in The Forge
-
Heavy Chestplate: Combined Strength and Value You’ll spend a lot of time crafting in The Forge—forging and selling armor and weapons is the main way you earn money. Heavy chestplates are one of the most valuable things you can craft, especially early in the game when you don’t have access to rare ores. Experiment with combining different ores to make heavy chestplates. Keep the one with the best stats and sell the rest to help you progress through the game more quickly.
- Recipe: Any 33–40 ores
-
2Medium Chestplate: Balanced Strength and Speed A medium-weight chestplate is a balanced option for beginner players. If you get the Samurai variant, it can reach 25–30 DEF, depending on the ores you use and how well you do at the minigame. It can also be pretty valuable, so once you’re able to craft something stronger, you’ll get a nice cash boost from selling it.
- Recipe: Any 24 ores (You’ll get better base stats by using rarer ores like Cobalt, Titanium, and Lapis Lazuli)
-
3Diamond Knight Chestplate: Second Island Upgrade If you’ve recently reached the second island and you’re looking to upgrade your armor, try this chestplate. The ores are all pretty easily attainable, and at 46–71 base DEF, it’s a big upgrade over the armor you’ll make on the first island.

- 9 Cobalt
- 11 Diamond
- 6 Titanium
- 7 Lapis Lazuli

4Light: Best First Chestplate These aren’t the strongest chestplates out there—your base DEF will probably be around 10–11, depending on what ore you use. But you can make one almost immediately once you start the tutorial, and since you won’t be fighting very strong enemies yet, this is a good option for just starting out. In the early game, ores like Platinum, Aite, and Titanium will give you the best results.
- Recipe: Any 10–11 ores (The ores available early in the game do not add traits to armor.)
Crafting Tips for Making a Chestplate in The Forge
-
1Experiment with ores, especially early on. Once you reach the mid- and late-game, you can follow recipes to help optimize your armor based on the stats you get from different ores. But you can only craft based on what’s in your inventory, so don’t be afraid to try out your own combinations to see what you come up with.
- Pay attention to the multiplier that shows beneath your ore selection. This is an important stat—a higher multiplier means more powerful armor.
- Try a Forge calculator to experiment with different combinations of ores, like theforgecalculator.com and The Forge Calculator from BloxInformer.
- One popular resource for forging recipes is this spreadsheet created by players Nipozy & Trhees. It shows various combinations of ores, as well as the multipliers and traits you’ll receive.
-
2Stay focused during the forging minigame. When you’re forging, be especially careful during the part of the minigame where you have to click on the circles. Your score during this game can have a huge impact on the base defense of your armor—if you get 100%, you’ll max out the defense, but it drops down every time you make a mistake.[2]
- This will also affect the value of the finished piece.
-
3Reforge your chestplate until you get the Dark Knight or Samurai variant. The regular versions of Medium and Heavy armor are fine—but that’s all, just fine. If you really want a powerful piece of armor, you need to forge the Samurai (Medium) or Dark Knight (Heavy) variant. You’ll get higher base defense and a health boost, so it’s worth the extra time.[3]
- There’s a 1 in 2 chance of forging Samurai or Dark Knight, so there’s a decent chance you’ll get lucky and hit it the first chance.
- You can only forge Samurai and Dark Knight on the second island. If you’re still on the first island, you’ll only be able to forge the regular variants.
-
4Enhance your armor and add runes to strengthen it. Once you’ve crafted the chestplate you want, head over to the Enhancer’s shop. Each time you enhance, you’ll get a stat boost. You’ll also add Rune Slots after 3, 6, and 9 enhancements.[4]
- Visit the Runemaker to attach runes to your weapons and armor.
- You can get runes by defeating enemies. Stronger enemies drop more powerful runes.
